Prof Giuliano Augusti
Sapienza Università di Roma
PROF. GIULIANO AUGUSTI was born in Naples (Italy) in 1935, graduated in Civil Engineering from the University of Naples in 1958, got a Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from the University of Cambridge (UK) in 1964 and the "Libera Docenza in Scienza delle Costruzioni" in 1965, and developed a career of teaching and research in Structural Mechanics in several Italian Universities (Naples, Palermo, Cagliari, Florence), with some experiences abroad (was a Post-Doctoral Teaching and Research Fellow at Brown University, Providence, USA in 1968-69; a Visiting Professor at the National Somali University, Mogadishu in 1981). In the University of Florence, where he became a Full Professor of Structural Mechanics in 1973, he was Chairman of the Institute (now Department) of Civil Engineering from 1976-81, and Dean of Engineering from 1982 to 1985, when he moved to Rome where he worked and taught as Professor in the Università "La Sapienza",
In September 1996 he was awarded a “Fellowship” by the European Society for Engineering Education SEFI.
In January 1997 he was awarded a Honorary “Doctor of Engineering” Degree (Doktor-Ingenieur Ehren halber: Dr.-Ing.E.h.) by Ruhr Universität, Bochum, Germany.
In January 1999 he was admitted to the Degree of “Doctor of Science”, the highest degree awarded by the University of Cambridge.
In April 2000 the Russian Academy of Architecture and Structural Sciences elected Prof. Augusti as a Foreign Member.
In September 2004 SEFI awarded to Prof. Augusti the “Leonardo da Vinci” Medal for “living persons who have made an outstanding contribution of international significance to engineering education”.
Prof. Augusti has been the Director of the Interuniversity Research Center on Building Aerodynamics and Wind Engineering CRIACIV, formed by Departments of the Universities of Roma "La Sapienza" and Firenze, since its foundation (1991) to 1998: in this quality, he has been the Scientific Coordinator, within the CE Programme "Human Capital and Mobility", of the Network BEATRICE (Building and Environmental Aerodynamics: Training, Research and Inter-Change of Expertise) and of the homonymous series of "Euroconferences" (1994-96). He is now the Honorary President of CRIACIV, that presently includes eight Universities (Firenze, Roma Sapienza, Perugia, Chieti-Pescara, Trieste, Venezia IUAV, Padova and Reggio Calabria).
Prof. Giuliano Augusti, President of the European Network for Accreditation of Engineering Education ENAEE from its foundation in February 2006 until March 2012, has been a Full Professor of Solid and Structural Mechanics in "Sapienza - Università di Roma” since 1985 (when he moved from the same position at the University of Florence) until his retirement on 1st November 2010. He has published more than 250 research articles on several aspects of his discipline (stability, plasticity, dynamics, earthquake and wind engineering, probabilistic approaches, risk analysis, etc.) and is co-author of the volume “Probabilistic Methods in Structural Engineering”, Chapman & Hall, 1984.
In parallel with his teaching and scientific research activities, Prof. Augusti has acquired over the years a vast experience in the field of recognition and accreditation of engineering education at the national, European and global levels, and has published and edited a number of papers and reports on the subject. He was a member of the Administrative Council of SEFI (European Society for Engineering Education) for many years and President in 1987/88; since several years he sits also in the Editorial Board of the European Journal of Engineering Education (EJEE). In 1994 Prof. Augusti chaired a Task Force of the European Commission (EC) in charge of investigating possible synergies between recognition of qualifications for academic and professional purposes: the report of this Task Force lead to an EC Recommendation issued in December 1994. Then he has been active with continuity in European Thematic Networks on Engineering Education: H3E, 1997-99; E4, 2000-04; TREE, 2004-08; EUGENE (European and Global Engineering Education), 2009-12.
Prof. Augusti has been the Coordinator of the EC-supported projects EUR-ACE (EURopean ACcredited Engineer) (2004-2006), EUR-ACE IMPLEMENTATION (2006-2008) and EUR-ACE SPREAD (2008-2010), and was active in several other analogous projects, like “PRO-EAST: promotion and implementation of the EUR-ACE Standards in Russia” (2006-2007), “LEPAC: Creation of a Lebanese Engineering Accreditation Commission” (2006-2008).
