Dr Jean-Paul Schwitzguébel, French and Swiss citizen, is a plant and microbial biochemist, with Master in Biology from the University of Geneva, and PhD from the Department of Biochemistry (University of Geneva) on the intracellular compartmentation and regulation of carbon and energy metabolism in Neurospora crassa.
Afterwards he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Microbiology (ETH Zurich) on the regulation of C3 and C4 metabolism in Acetobacter aceti; at the Department of Botany of the Imperial College of Science and Technology in London (UK) on bioenergetics and alternative respiratory chains in plant and fungal mitochondria; and at the Laboratory of Plant Physiology of the University of Neuchatel, on plant mitochondria, peroxisomes and chloroplasts. His basic research was thus always focusing on the metabolism and bioenergetics of higher plants and microorganisms.
Afterwards he moved to the “Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne” (EPFL) as a permanent senior scientist at the Laboratory for Environmental Biotechnology. In addition to teaching and administrative duties, most of his work is now devoted to research and development in the fields of phytoremediation and bioenergy.
He was the initiator and coordinator of COST Action 837 (Plant biotechnology for the removal of organic pollutants and toxic metals from wastewaters and contaminated sites, 1998-2003, and COST Action 859 (Phytotechnologies to promote sustainable land use and improve food safety, 2004-2009). In November 2009 he was appointed as the Swiss delegate on the Management Committee of the new COST Action CM0903 (Utilisation of biomass for sustainable fuels and chemicals, 2009-2013). In the framework of this network, he will develop collaboration with European colleagues to produce biofuels from microalgae and plant biomass.
Dr Jean-Paul Schwitzguébel is also the Swiss delegate on the COST Domain Committee on Food and Agriculture.

The journey of teaching in forestry start from Private colleges of forestry as Assistant professor when privatization of higher education just started namely, Doon PG College of agriculture and Dolphin PG Institute of Biomedical and Natural Sciences in Dehradun from mid 2003 under HNB Garhwal university, Srinagar Uttarakhand. I significantly contributed in both the new institutes where I engaged in teaching the forestry subjects. In 2005, I shifted to College of Horticulture & Forestry, Jhalawar under Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture & Technology, Udaipur. I assumed title “MSc Engineer” in 1998 and “PhD” in 2004.
I worked as research assistant in Trakya University, Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Soil Science between 1996 and 2007. I am working as Assistant Professor in Namık Kemal University, Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition since 2007.
I attended many meetings, courses, seminars, panels, workshops, congress and festivals at home and abroad.
I was assigned to lecture for one week each within the context of Erasmus teaching staff mobility at Trakia Democritus University in Greece in 2011 and at University of Technology and Life Sciences in Poland in 2013.
I was assigned for 3 months between 11 July and 10 October at “the University of Vermont” in Vermont-USA to take a part in a project called “use of soil earthworms in agriculture”. I was invited in November-December 2012 by the same university and attended some scientific collaborative studies in order to carry out projects about “vermicompost and soil earthworms” in the University of Vermont.
I served as project head and researcher in 15 projects supported by Tübitak, Trakya University, Namık Kemal University, Nevşehir Hacı Bektaş Veli University, Bilecik Seyh Edebali University and Bozok University Scientific Research Projects Units.
I have 96 articles on soil science, soil ecology, plant nutrition, soil fertility, soil chemistry, soil-water pollution, ecologic agriculture and fertilization topics as research articles and papers presented in domestic and abroad scientific meetings. Also, 8 of them are the articles published in international periodicals cited by international science indexes (SCI).
I won 12 months research scholarship at “The University of Vermont” in Vermont-USA for the second term of 2013 in the context of TUBITAK 2219 International Postdoctoral Research Scholarship Program.
I study the subjects about soil earthworms, vermicompost production from different organic wastes, set up and control of modern vermicompost production plants which are popular subjects all around the world recently.
